Best Plumbing Practices

Let’s start with something which is not only an essential in everyone’s house but also a must for the environment and the plants, Rainwater harvesting. According to your space (rainwater collecting area, mainly terrace), design the size of your rainwater filtering tank. After filtering make it reach your borewell. To avoid a pipe break due to heavy rain, have a  pipeline connected to main drain.

Second important one is the main drain which is going to connect the house’s wastewater to the corporation drain. Kindly keep a reverse control pipe to avoid water coming back into our house in case of a heavy rainfall, clog/flood, etc. It’s always good to have minimum 4”-6” outlet pipe. Also design a chamber of main outlet for future troubleshooting.

It’s much important to decide the submersible motor capacity according to the no of floors water has to be lifted. Else its best to allow water to drop down in underground sump and then lift it to overhead tank.

Keep your septic tank and underground sump in your front side of the house so that future fixing will be easy. Design your underground sump in such a way that it holds at least one complete tanker of water. Also, plan separate tank for corporation water.

Plan overhead tank according to your requirement capacity and no of flats. Keep an additional outlet pipe at bottom of tank and just keep a valve at reachable location so that, when you want to empty the tank you just open this valve and clean it during tank cleaning. Else the dirty water will get into other pipes and clog it.

Whether multi-story or single floor, keep an additional cap at each drain to trouble shoot them separately in case of clogging.

You may wonder why I am getting always keen on clogging. Here’s why, when the building gets older, you keep facing this issue if not maintained properly or if the water is hard.  I  am sure that people who faced this issue understand the pain and trouble it can cause.

Trying to locate bathrooms nearby can help combine drains and even bring in the possibility of using common geysers for both bathrooms!

Washing machine, wherever you locate it in the house, try to take care of its water spills, possibly with a small outlet near it and with a slope so that the water reaches this outlet.

Bathroom plumbing is highly dependent on bathroom size and design. Please subscribe or come back later to check our detailed post on bathroom design planned next.

Now let’s see what best we could do to the sink outlet:

The outlet of the sink plays a major role, if it is messed up, then its highly difficult to maintain the kitchen. The best way to implement is as above (right), where the cap at the bottom will help us to remove the clogged wastes. This is implemented in big apartments in order to avoid clogging the main drain. Else it will always be the case that ground floor people will suffer clogging, because of solid waste put in sink drains. As the famous saying goes, as you sow, so you reap. Likewise, your own solid wastes will clog your drain and not others’ and vice versa.

If you are having individual house, then plan to have drain chambers to clean up the clogs if any.

There are solid waste grinding motors available now a days which can be a great relief, Click here to see one such at Amazon
